Skin Barrier and Moisture
A dry, low-humidity environment with temperatures that are too high or too low is the main cause of weaker skin barrier functions. If the cornified layer’s moisture content drops below 10%, dead skin cells do not fall off in time, thereby resulting in insufficient lipids that fill between the cells.
This causes the skin to easily lose its moistness to the air, and foreign substances easily penetrate into the skin, making the skin dry and sensitive to even the smallest irritations. This may lead to asteatosis, acne, or even skin diseases like psoriasis or atopic dermatitis.
What We Found?
SKIN&LAB Skin Barrier Research Center studied the moisture barrier mechanism to capture moisture inside the skin and protect the skin against harmful substances on the outside. We particularly focused on hyaluronic acid, which is a jelly-like substance found between collagen and elastic fibers in the dermal layer. We discovered that after the age of 25, the skin barrier is destroyed and the water retention capacity is deteriorated, which quickly reduces hyaluronic acid inside the skin.
